BA (Hons) Economics

• GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C or above, or Grade 4 under newly reformed GCSE grading, in English Language and Mathematics or Statistics, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
• A-level subjects: No specific subjects required. Points from A-Level General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-Levels.
• Relevant subjects: Business, Management
• EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: No specific subjects required.
• Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma; to include 30 level 3 credits at merit.
• Baccalaureate IB: No specific subjects required.

English Language Requirement:

• If English is not your first language, you will be required to meet the UK Border Agency and Universities minimum English Language requirements such as the International English Language Test (IELTS) overall score of 6.0 with 5.5 in each component.

Year 0 (Foundation year)

Year one

The first year provides a foundation for the development of the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary for your future as an economics graduate. You will be proficient in the use of Excel and able to undertake statistical analysis.

Year two

In the second year, you will study modules that extend your understanding of economics and increase your depth of knowledge. Along with this, statistical and econometric software packages that are readily sought by employers will be introduced.

• Introductory Econometrics

Plus two of the following optional modules (subject to availability):

• Good Business, Bad Business and Sustainability
• Emerging Economies
• Economics of Money and Banking

Final year

All students are encouraged to spend their third year on placement and the curriculum in the first and second years provides support for the process of securing this. Alternatively, students can undertake a study year abroad (SYA). The final year includes a dissertation or applied project that is informed by the knowledge and abilities gained in the earlier years of study, while the optional modules allow you to focus on particular areas of interest.
