About
Physical therapy, also known as physiotherapy, is a specialized branch of rehabilitative medicine dedicated to helping patients maintain, recover, or improve their physical abilities. Physical therapists work with individuals whose movement may be compromised by aging, disease, environmental factors, or injuries sustained from sports or accidents. They utilize various physical methods and exercises to treat pain, diseases, or injuries, aiming to enhance mobility and overall quality of life.
The primary goal of physical therapy is to identify and maximize a patient's movement potential through a range of interventions, including prevention, treatment, promotion, habilitation, and rehabilitation. Habilitation involves making someone capable of performing tasks, while rehabilitation focuses on restoring abilities that have been lost or impaired. Additionally, physical therapists promote health by empowering individuals to improve their overall well-being and control over their health.
Physical therapy is grounded in clinical health science and involves the study of anatomy, neuroscience, physiology, and other medical subjects to effectively prevent, diagnose, and treat patients with physical ailments. Physical therapists are experts in examining and treating conditions affecting the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and neuromuscular systems, addressing not only physical aspects but also considering psychological, emotional, and social factors.
The practice of physical therapy entails collaboration between physical therapists, patients, other healthcare professionals, families, caregivers, and communities. Through assessment, diagnosis, and goal-setting, physical therapists employ their unique knowledge and skills to help individuals regain or improve their movement abilities, ultimately enhancing their overall health and well-being.
