Entry Requirements

  • Transcript secondary school
  • If English is not your first language, we require evidence of English language ability in reading, writing and speaking. If you do not hold an English language equivalent to UK GCSE standard, then you should hold one of the following qualifications.
    • IELTS: 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in each component.
    • TOEFL (internet-based test): 92 with not less than 21 in listening, 21 in reading, 23 in speaking and 22 in writing.

Curriculum

  • In your first year, you’ll work on the building blocks of your degree – pattern making and garment construction – while getting to know both menswear and womenswear. You’ll also work on visual research and product development to get a clearer sense of the design process. Then you’ll take core modules introducing you to principles of product development, technology and art and design as a whole.
  • You could also take discovery modules from across the University, including business and enterprise modules run by Leeds University Business School that are very popular with BA Fashion Design students.
  • You’ll specialise in menswear or womenswear in your studio practice when you move into the second year. As you start to build a professional, diverse portfolio of your own work, you’ll face a range of project briefs to develop design solutions for different customer profiles and explore areas of the fashion market. You’ll also work with professional standards and choose from optional modules on subjects such as colour, designing sports and performance clothing or fashion in the 20th century.
  • The skills you’ve developed throughout your course will come together in the final year, when you’ll create innovative garments and a professional design portfolio. You’ll get the chance to explore your personal design philosophy, and demonstrate the critical and research skills you’ve gained in a written dissertation on a topic of your choice.
