"Are there any tips on how to improve English?" This question is often asked among non-native speakers.
Due to the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, English proficiency among students has decreased tremendously.
This unfortunate circumstance can be attributed to several factors, including the limited distribution of class materials and the challenges of adapting to online learning.
These formidable issues have led to long-term consequences for students.
As we are concerned, English is the most widely spoken language in the world, and it is becoming increasingly important to speak and understand it fluently.
English language usage applies not only to educational institutions but to the workplace too.
Hence, it is an urgent call for everyone to improve their English fluency.
This article will discuss six effective tips on how to improve English, including reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar.
English Lacked-Proficiency: What Is The Main Cause?
When I was a university student, I took an intensive English writing class at a local university.
On the first day of the class, my lecturer said, "There are two fearsome words that might dissuade students from taking this subject. They are "English" and "writing."
I second his opinion because it is a challenging reality that most people (students and civil workers) face now.
In addition to the opinion, their difficulty with the language is not due to a lack of understanding.
Rather, it is a need for more confidence in using English to communicate through writing or speaking.
It is a common misconception or stigma that an individual's intelligence is determined by their fluency in speaking English. However, this notion is misguided.
Consequently, many individuals tend to limit their use of English due to a reluctance to step outside their comfort zone.
This reluctance may stem from a fear of being judged on their language proficiency, causing them only to use it when necessary.
As a result, some individuals might need help during job interviews and class presentations.
It prevents them from presenting their ideas and making a good impression on the audience (in this case, the interview and lecturer).
6 Effective Tips How To Improve English
Feeling discouraged from using English (written or verbal) is an understandable circumstance.
Nevertheless, it is essential to not let that discouragement hold back your confidence in using the language.
You can still polish your English skills for your own benefit and satisfaction.
Here are six effective tips on how to improve English:
1. Reading
A famous children's author, Dr. Seuss, once said, "The more you read, the more things you'll know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
Reading introduces you to new vocabulary, grammar structures, and aids in your comprehension of the English language.
However, avoiding pressuring yourself into selecting complex materials or unfamiliar reading genres is essential.
Choosing texts that match your level is crucial.
For beginners, children's books or easy-to-read novels are ideal choices. As you become more proficient, you can gradually move on to more challenging materials.
And there is nothing to be ashamed of with reading children's books. They are entertaining, colorful and feature cute illustrations. It's just my two cents, anyway.
Reading a variety of texts is also beneficial. It allows you to develop a comprehensive understanding of the English language.
You can explore articles from newspapers, magazines, websites, and social media posts.
2. Writing

Did you know that improving your English language skills requires reading and writing, but not necessarily at the same time?
Writing in a journal, starting a blog, or crafting short stories and poems are effective ways to practice grammar and vocabulary.
It also hones your writing style.
Alternatively, you can join online writing classes and writing communities on social media platforms like LinkedIn or Facebook.

Another option is searching for typing speed test websites on Google to practice typing English words with correct grammar and various vocabulary usage.
These websites are engaging and enjoyable, especially during leisure time.
The more you practice writing, the more you will improve your skills.
3. Speaking

Speaking in English can be a daunting challenge for many people.
Even those who are usually "talkative" can become as quiet as a mouse when asked to speak in English.
However, if you want to become fluent in English, it is important to practice speaking as much as possible.
One way to practice is by talking to native speakers or people who speak English as a second language.
You could also join a conversation club or practice speaking to yourself in front of a mirror.
Watching English-language movies and TV shows can also be helpful.
You can improve your pronunciation and vocabulary by setting English subtitles and following along while speaking.
As you listen to how native speakers use the language, you will become more comfortable using English in everyday conversations.
4. Listening
One effective way to improve your comprehension skills in English is by listening to songs, movies, TV shows, or podcasts.
This exposes you to new vocabulary and grammar structures that you can pick up.
Additionally, it's beneficial to seek out opportunities to listen to native speakers speak English in person, as everyday conversations and music can sound different than you may be used to.
5. Grammar
To communicate effectively in English, it's crucial to have a good grasp of grammar.
Grammar forms the foundation of every language, including nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, interjections, and more.
There are many ways to improve your grammar skills. You can enroll in grammar classes or take online quizzes on Google.
If you prefer physical books, you can find grammar books at bookstores.
When selecting grammar books, ensure they include exercises and explanations to help you understand the rules better.
Whatever method you choose, regular practice is key to mastering grammar.
Find a technique that suits you and stick to it for the best results.
6. Stay motivated!

Additionally, hearing about the experience of others who have learned English can be inspiring.
There are numerous stories of individuals who have mastered English as a second langugae and achieved remarkable accomplishments.
To sum up, the tips on how to improve English can be challenging to do, but it is a fulfilliing learning journey.
By improving your English proficiency, it opens doorts to opportunities such as landing an international job, expanding your social circle, or even pursuing education abroad.
However, it is improtant to push yourself to take action immediately.
Keep in mind that success does not happen overnight and requires consistent effort. Hence, the most outstanding achievements often come at the perfect timing.
